Large County School System
Complete HVAC system replacement in 7-week summer window with zero disruption to fall semester operations
CLIENT
Large County School System
LOCATION
Georgia
PROJECT TYPE
HVAC System Replacement
FACILITY TYPE
High School Campus
The Situation
This large county school system had one of their largest high schools that needed major HVAC upgrades to a 35-year-old system. The project presented multiple logistical challenges including the need to remove and replace a significant amount of steel and copper piping located above ceilings, re-insulate the pipe, and have it operational in just 7 weeks during the summer break.
Our Approach
We developed a phased execution plan that maximized the limited summer window while ensuring all systems would be fully operational before students returned. Our team coordinated closely with the school district’s facilities management to minimize disruption to other summer activities.
The Work
- Removal and replacement of 2.5 miles of chilled water and hot water heating piping
- Installation of 117 four-pipe fan coil units serving the school
- Integration of new units into the existing building automation system
- Complete re-insulation of all new piping systems
- Comprehensive testing and commissioning of all equipment
Special Coordination Requirements
The project required careful coordination with the school’s summer programs and maintenance activities. All major equipment installation was scheduled during specific windows to avoid conflicts with ongoing educational activities and facility maintenance.
Key Challenges
- Complete system replacement in compressed 7-week summer timeframe
- Removal and replacement of extensive piping above ceilings
- Integration with existing building automation system
- Maintaining project timeline to ensure readiness for fall semester
- Coordinating with school district's busy summer maintenance schedule
Our Solution
- Applied HVAC systems expertise to develop strategic design assistance
- Facilitated condensed 7-week project schedule through careful planning
- Improved building operational and maintenance requirements
- Added and relocated control valves to optimize energy consumption
- Enhanced system efficiency during low load conditions
The Results
This Mallory and Evans project was completed under budget in only 7 weeks. By the end of the project, our team had removed and replaced 5 miles of piping throughout the school through additional scope changes. The school system was overjoyed to see it completed early and under budget, ensuring students returned to a fully modernized climate control system.
